17/1 SCHOOL TERM DATES FOR THE 2018/2019 AND 2019/2020 ACADEMIC YEARS

The Executive Director for Childrens Services submitted a report that sought a  decision on the school term dates for the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic years following the results of consultation.

 

The report outlined that the Local Authority had a statutory responsibility for setting school term dates for its Community, Voluntary Controlled and Community Special schools. For Academy, Foundation, Voluntary Aided or Foundation Special schools the school Governing Trust board have the responsibility for setting their own school term dates.

 

In establishing proposed term dates, consultation in Middlesbrough had taken place with all Chairs of Governors, Head Teachers, Academy Principals, Secondary and Primary Head Teacher Cluster Groups, neighbouring North Eastern Local Authorities, Trade Union representatives and the Diocese of Middlesbrough.

 

The report outlined that there were two options that were consulted on for the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic years:

 

Option 1 2018/19: 195 days including five Professional Development Days: The five Professional Development days are set on an individual school basis.


The academic year will commence - Monday 3 September 2018.

October half term will commence on 29 October 2018.  Christmas Holidays will commence 24 December 2018, February half term would commence on 18 February 2019. The Easter break would commence on Monday 8 April 2019 and finish Tuesday 23 April 2019 (two week break). May half term commence on Monday 27 May 2019 and finish 3 June 2019 (one week break). Academic year will finish on Tuesday 23 July 2019.

 

Option 2 2018/19: 195 days including five Professional Development Days: The five Professional Development days are set on an individual school basis.
 

The academic year will commence - Monday 3 September 2018.

October half term will commence on 29 October 2018. Christmas Holidays will commence 24 December 2018, February half term would commence on 18 February 2019. The Easter break would commence on Monday 15 April 2019 and finish Tuesday 23 April 2019 (one week break). May half term commence on Monday 27 May 2019 and finish on Monday 10 June 2019 (two week break). Academic year will finish on Tuesday 23 July 2019.

Academic year will finish on Monday 20 July 2020

 

Option 2 2019/20: 195 days including five Professional Development Days: The five Professional Development days are set on an individual school basis.

 

The academic year will commence - Monday 2 September 2019.

October half term will commence on 28 October 2019. Christmas Holidays will commence 23 December 2019, February half term would commence on 17 February 2020. The Easter break would commence on Thursday 9 April 2020 and finish Monday 20 April 2020 (one week break). May half term commence on Monday 25 May 2020 and finish on Monday 8 June 2020 (two week break). Academic year will finish on Tuesday 21 July 2020.

 

It was noted that consultation closed on Friday 12 May 2017.

That Option 1 be agreed in setting term dates for the 2018/19 and 2019/20 academic years.

 

REASON

 

The decision was supported by the following reason:

 

Option 1 for both academic years fits with the Secondary School examinations timetable it matches the decisions by the other four LAs in the Tees Valley area and will be easier for parents and staff.

The decision(s) will come into force after five working days following the day the decision(s) was published unless the decision becomes subject to the call in procedures.
