The Executive Director of Wellbeing, Care and Learning submitted a report that sought approval on the school term dates for the 2017/18 academic year following the results of consultation.
The Local Authority had a statutory responsibility for setting school term dates for its Community, Voluntary Controlled and Community Special schools. For Academy, Foundation, Voluntary Aided or Foundation Special schools the school Governing Trust board had the responsibility for setting their own school term dates.
In establishing proposed term dates, consultation in Middlesbrough had taken place with all Chairs of Governors, Head Teachers, Academy Principals, Secondary and Primary Head Teacher Cluster Groups, neighbouring North Eastern Local Authorities, Trade Union representatives and the Diocese of Middlesbrough.
The report outlined in detail that there were two options available.
That Option 1 be approved in setting term dates for the 2017/18 academic year.
The decision was supported by the following reason:
Option 1 fits with the Secondary School examinations timetable it matches the decisions by the other four LAs in the Tees Valley area and will be easier for parents and staff.
